Applying SIP protocol in a Hosted PBX system

By: John K

A Hosted PBX system is implemented using the VoIP protocol to provide call management and routing at a lower cost. The SIP protocol is effectively used here for providing a high level of quality in the voice communication. This protocol enables a service provider of Hosted PBX system to provide the same quality of service as the conventional phone system, but at an affordable price.

The SIP protocol was developed during the mid-90s. It is a text based real-time communication protocol used in the IP (Internet Protocol). This protocol performs basic call related tasks such as call initiation, session setup and termination, dial tone, call transfer, and other tasks such as caller ID and caller hold. SIP is basically a text based protocol, which makes it easy to program and add features when required.

In a phone system utilizing SIP, the call setup is managed by the SIP agents present in the end-points i.e. the phones. This enables two different phones to function in a more peer-to-peer fashion. A voice channel is established directly between the two end-points, delivering sound with the same quality as the conventional telephone system.

A Hosted PBX system thus cannot be simply categorized as a low-cost alternative. In fact, it matches with the big expensive modern Business phone systems owned by well-established multinationals.
