Backup phone systems for Business continuity

By: John K

Companies implement backup systems for their important data, without fail. They install expensive backup servers in remote disaster recovery sites. But very few companies successful implement a backup system for their communications systems.
Backup phone systems are best implemented through a hosted pbx. A hosted pbx system does not require any equipment to be installed in the company premises. A service provider provides the required functionalities of a PBX phone system through a dedicated line. Hence, this system can be implemented in any geographic location.
Service providers of hosted pbx system provide their clients with both local phone numbers and toll free telephone numbers. Calls to these numbers are routed by the service provider. Hence, any change in the company location, in the event of a natural disaster, will not have any effect on the numbers. The company can maintain the same old phone numbers. The calls will be routed appropriately to the new location by the service provider. Such kind of backup system for the phone numbers enables a company to maintain communication with its customers and clients from the new location.
In case the company cannot establish a new site, phone calls to the employees will be routed to their cell phone or residence numbers. This kind of routing is possible through a special routine called find me/follow me. If a recipient cannot be reached through a particular number, other numbers in a pre-defined list is used to track the recipient. Thus if the telephone equipment in the office is malfunctioning, the calls will be automatically diverted to the other numbers contained in the list. In case, the recipient could not be reached by these numbers, the calls will be diverted to the central voicemail system. The messages from the callers are recorded and stored in the recipient's voice mailbox. In the event of disruption in the company's communication system, all the calls will be diverted to the alternate numbers or to the voice mail system. On resumption of the company's communication system, the voice mail system can be checked for important messages.
A hosted PBX system is thus effective in providing an effective backup system for phone communications. Moreover, this kind of pbx telephone system is not so expensive as the premise based pbx systems maintained by large companies.
