The chances are the only time you really think about your phone system is when
you’re struggling with it. The truth is it could be the hidden millstone around
your company’s neck!
Ever checked that mysterious box hidden away up on the wall or in a cupboard? If
its labelled Panasonic, Avaya, Cisco or Nortel then you’ve got trouble ( and if
it’s a BT system abandon all hope). The reality is these guys pushed their
resellers to “box shift” this proprietary kit for years. They no doubt charged
you the equivalent of the GDP of a small African nation to install and support
the thing. If they could have licensed the actual numbers on the phone they

Their business was and still is a 100% certified license to print money, its
been a bit like paying protection money to your local mafia don!
The truth is phone systems have tended to be so expensive that small companies
keep them for years, even when they’ve been quite happy to replace other bits of
kit in the office.

A Cry For Help!
About 12 months ago one of our oldest customers contacted us. We know Colin, the
MD, well. He runs a small engineering company. They’ve got a back office with
about 20 staff and we’ve looked after their computer systems and network for
years…
“Guys we have a problem with our phone system. We’re really struggling to make a
couple of changes. We have some new starters we need extensions and direct
numbers for. On top of that our out of hours message isn’t working anymore! BT
want an arm and a leg to come out to it and I just can’t get anyone else
interested at all. Help!”
…now we don’t “do” traditional phone systems as such. Small office phone systems
are a minefield into which you really don’t want to stray! If your company’s
phone system is more than a couple of years old then its operation is likely to
be a mystery known only to itself and the monolithic corporation who
manufactured the thing. Basically we don’t touch them with a bargepole! If you
can get anyone to come out at all they are likely to want a blank cheque up
front!
Still, Colin was getting a bit desperate,
“Help us out on this one guys please!”
Our Telephone System Nightmare Begins…
So we took a look at Colin’s phone system……that’s when the nightmare began…
The system was squeezed onto a wall underneath a staircase. It was a British
Telecom “mash-up” from the early 90’s and there seemed to be enough power cables
going into the thing to run a small aluminium smelting plant! Yet it only
supported about 20 extensions and a few simple functions. It was literally
bolted to the wall and the manual consisted of two dusty and unintelligible
sheets of A4 paper!
I could see we had a big problem! The only trick we had up our sleeve was I knew
a semi retired telephone engineer. He might, just might, know how to talk to
this thing in terms it understood (presumably something along the lines of
101010101010…)!
After three days of blood, sweat, toil and tears from my retired engineer,
Colin’s system was eventually back up and running. I swore (quite a lot in fact)
“never again”. Colin’s phone system was living on borrowed time and there was no
guarantee we’d be able to sort the thing out a second time.
We soon realised Colin wasn’t the only customer in the same position.
More and more of these old style systems are coming up for “retirement" or
companies have bought replacements over the last few years that are just not
“fit for purpose”…
…the chances are you’ve got one yourself!
It was time for a fresh start…
There Had To Be A Better Solution…
We did our research, we knew what functionality to look for.
There had to be a better solution than the traditional phone systems that had
been forced on small businesses, we wanted…

• while we’re at it I wanted it to work over the internet as well as normal
phone lines so I could reduce my call charges and line rental to the bare
minimum… oh and best of all I wanted to pay half the price of any competing
system……
All in all a pretty tall order eh?
Fortunately such a system isn’t a myth…it already exist its called Trixbox.
